Fall Color Report: Colors In Boone Look Spectacular, Grandfather Provides Great Views For Lower Elevations

By Mark S. Kenna

Oct. 25, 2013. Reports of excellent colors are coming from Boone and Blowing Rock, near the peak in the 3,000 and 4,000-foot elevation range, said Joe Veler, founder of Virtual Blue Ridge.

On Grandfather Mountain, fall colors no longer linger on the mountaintop as peak colors hit a week to two weeks ago, Landis Taylor, director of communications for Grandfather Mountain said.

High winds were reported on Wednesday night, which knocked some of the leaves off the trees on the mountain, Taylor added.

However, even with peak color no longer on Grandfather, the mountain is still a great destination to look down on the fall colors developing at lower elevations in Hickory and Morganton.

A dusting of snow fell on Grandfather Mountain last night and visitors today get the treat of experiencing fall and winter at the same time. This image was taken at Half Moon Overlook where the red mountain ash berries made a striking impact against the overcast skies. Photo by Katie Casella

The top peaks of Grandfather Mountain are coated in ice this morning as fog is freezing to the trees along the ridgeline. This photo was taken at Smoketree Lodge off of NC Hwy 105 where fall color is still very bright. Photo by Katie Casella
