73-Year-Old Elk Park Woman Dies in Accidental Fire as Trailer Engulfed in Flames

By Jesse Wood

A 73-year-old Elk Park woman died in what appears to be an accidental structure fire at about 1 a.m. on Saturday.

In the early hours of Saturday, Avery County fire departments, medics and law enforcement personnel responded to the 220 Reservoir Hill Road residence engulfed in flames.

The single-wide trailer belonged to Joyce K. Shoemaker, 73. Her body was discovered within the trailer after firefighters entered the burning home, according to Avery County Sheriff Kevin Frye.

Avery County Sheriff’s Office along with the NC SBI are working the fatal fire.

“We feel so sorry for the family, friends and neighbors of Mrs. Shoemaker, she was a wonderful lady and was held in great regard by those who knew her,” Frye said in a statement. “At this time it appears by all circumstances this was an accidental fire and there is nothing of criminal concern, we just offer our thoughts and prayers to all concerned as they process this tremendous loss.”
