High Country Gets First Big Winter Storm of 2013

Paul T. Choate

Jan. 18, 2013. Boone and the High Country gets its first big snowstorm of the winter season. Other than the freak October snowstorm that dumped five inches on Boone and even more at the higher elevations in the area, only 2.2 inches of snow had fallen so far in the 2012-2013 fall and winter seasons.

Though snow totals are hard to determine based on how much they vary, it is looking like anywhere from four inches on the low end to as much as a foot on the high end fell last night, according Facebook comments on the Ray’s Weather Center Facebook page

Ray’s Weather is reporting 6.8 inches for Boone. Carrie Garrison Vos said on the Ray’s Weather Facebook that six inches fell in Banner Elk. Blowing Rock got about 4.5 inches, according to my tape measure last night right as the snow was coming to an end.

Some of the higher amounts come from places like Beech Mountain (12 inches, according to Ray’s Weather) and places in Ashe and Alleghany counties. Robert Heavner commented, “11-12 inches W. Jefferson” on the Ray’s Weather Facebook page. “Close to 12 inches in Lansing,” reported Summer Severt. In downtown Sparta, over in Alleghany County, Carolynn Choate reported 10 inches to Ray’s Weather.

These reports are obviously unofficial and it may be a while before the true “official totals” come in. Stick with High Country Press. We’ll let you know when we know!
