Jan. 18, 2013. Based on preliminary reports coming in to our office, the main roads around the Boone area have for the most part been cleared. This is a shot of N.C. 105 near Ingles going into Boone this morning. Side roads are still snowy and icy, so if you live a little “off the beaten path,” travel may still be a bit treacherous.
Based on early reports, the snowfall amounts vary widely to say the least. As little as four inches or less has been reported in some areas, with some posting on the Ray’s Weather Center Facebook page saying they received nearly a foot. More snowfall is being reported especially at the higher elevations such as atop Beech Mountain and to our northeast over in Ashe and Alleghany counties.
The snow also forced Watauga and Avery county schools, Two Rivers Community School in Boone, Lees-McRae College and the Watauga branch of Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute to close today. Appalachian State University operated on a delay and is opening up right now, 10 a.m.
