More Than 27,000 Moped Owners Receive Second Notices About Insurance Requirement

The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles is mailing 27,919 second notices this week to remind moped owners about a new law that will require the vehicles to be insured beginning July 1. Moped owners whose vehicles are registered with the NCDMV received an initial letter about the change in late April.

They may also provide the insurance company’s name and policy number to their local plate agency. Failure to provide proof of insurance to NCDMV could result in their license plate being revoked.

Once NCDMV receives insurance information from a moped owner, it will issue an updated registration card showing the new insurance information.

Moped owners were first required to register their vehicles with the Division in July 2015. The requirement for insurance coverage was added in a law passed by the General Assembly to become effective a year later.
