The Wiz is a retelling of The Wizard of Oz with a “soulful” twist. Every song is uplifting, and every journey is a parable telling us how to see a better world. The Lees-McRae production celebrates diversity as audiences will see actors from many cultures as they sing and dance the story.

Ol’ Blue Eyes will never be forgotten because Frank Sinatra knew how to effortlessly present a song with intention and style. My Way has been presented throughout the U.S. and abroad to sold out audiences. Audience members will hear their favorites: “All of Me,” “Chicago,” “I Love Paris,” and of course, “My Way” and many more. Beautiful musical arrangements performed by outstanding singers take us on a journey into an era we never want to forget.

In the Heights will take to the stage last, but certainly not least. The show will perform July 31 and August 2 and 4 at 7 p.m. as well as August 1, 3, 4 and 5 at 2 p.m.

Written by Hamilton composer, Lin-Manuel MirandaIn the Heights (PG-13) spans three generations of music representing the inhabitants of Washington Heights, New York. Following a dream, the people share memories of home, fall in love, worry about the changes in the neighborhood, and dance to Latin music from their countries, mixed with the rhythms of the streets. Winner of the 2008 Tonys for Best Musical, Best Orchestration and Best Score, this show not only tells an engaging story, but also informs us about a group of vibrant people who are part of our great country.

The 2018 Summer Theatre season will also include performances of Theatre for Young Audience’s Passport Please! Around the World in 45 Musical Minutes. The show will take place on June 9 and 16 as well as July 7 and 21 at 10 a.m. at the Theatre Arts Building.

An exciting adventure that teaches children about the diversity and beautiful culture that make up the world, this interactive musical is full of exciting original music and colorful characters from every corner of the globe. Perfect for young audiences, children will discover fascinating facts about countries while tapping their toes and clapping their hands.

Lees-McRae Summer Theatre Artistic Director, Janet Speer, shared her excitement for this year’s performances.

“I am always excited to begin work on Lees-McRae Summer Theatre, but this year has brought so many new explorations,” she said. “Our attention to diversity has led us to seek artists in different ways.”

Speer explained that many of the lead and supporting roles in all three shows will take a multi-cultural and diverse approach in order to “expand our worlds together at a time when it is needed most,” she said.
