NC Tax Filing Season to Begin on Jan. 28

The North Carolina Department of Revenue (NCDOR) will officially open the 2016 tax filing season and begin processing individual income tax returns on Jan. 28. The Internal Revenue Service began accepting returns on Jan. 19.

Taxpayers or preparers who submit a filing prior to the season’s opening should remain mindful that the IRS will not transmit any electronic returns to the NCDOR prior to Jan. 28. Additionally, individuals should use the date on which their returns are accepted at the NCDOR as the baseline when calculating state tax refund expectations; those dates will be on or after Jan. 28.

Tax returns are due this year on Monday, April 18. The regular deadline was extended because the federal government will be closed on Friday, April 15, to observe Emancipation Day.

Taxpayers are encouraged to file and pay electronically (eFile). The eFile method expedites processing of returns and refunds and is faster, easier, and more accurate than traditional filing and paying methods.

The NCDOR offers an eFile for Free option for those who qualify. National estimates indicate that as many as 70 percent of taxpayers qualify for eFile for Free and the IRS’s Free File programs. Taxpayers who earn less than $55,000 will likely qualify in most cases. Learn more by visiting http://www.dornc.com/electronic/e-file.html.
