Each year Watauga High School art students organize the Empty Bowls supper to benefit the Hunger & Health Coalition, and this year’s 14th annual fundraiser takes place at the high school on Saturday, April 11 from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

Tickets cost a minimum of $15 while the suggested donation is $20. While tickets can be purchased at the door on the day of the event, advance tickets are available at the Hunger & Health Coalition, Bare Essentials Natural Foods Market and the front office at WHS.

Empty BowlsFor the benefit, students will create and collect handmade ceramic bowls, donated soups and bread from area potters and restaurants. After the meal, guests keep their homemade bowls “as a reminder that there are always empty bowls and hungry people in the world.”

Empty Bowls concept began in 1990 when a high school art teacher in Michigan was looking for ways to raise funds to support a food drive. The students made ceramic bowls for the project and guests were served a simple meal of bread and soup. Since that first Empty Bowls supper, millions of dollars have been raised to fight hunger.

Last year, the WHS Empty Bowls event raised $10,400 for the Hunger & Health Coalition. In the past 13 years, the event has raised a total of $74,400 for the local nonprofit.

Area restaurants donating food this year include Stick Boy Bread Co., Woodlands Barbecue, The Speckled Trout Café, Pepper’s Restaurant, Casa Rustica, Troy’s 105 Diner, F.A.R.M. Café and Stick Boy Kitchen. Bare Essentials is providing drinks, Friends of Watauga is providing “desserts of all kinds” and WHS Pro Start II & Advanced Foods II classes are also making some soup. See attached menu.

The 2015 WHS Empty Bowls Project will feature bowls made by WHS students of Whit Whitaker, Dacia Trethewey, Lori Hill and Susan Dunn and by Watauga elementary students of Jill Huffman and Rae Filsinger. A number of local potters have also donated bowls for the project.

There will also be a silent auction, consisting of donated gift certificates, merchandise and artwork from area businesses, restaurants and artists.

All of the proceeds benefit the Hunger & Health Coalition and its programs to alleviate hunger in the High Country: Food Pantry Program, Food Recovery Program, The Market, Healthy Start, Snacks for Scholars and Back Pack Program.
