The Blowing Rock community brought the glamour and excitement of Hollywood to life on Friday for the annual Symphony by the Lake, a longstanding local tradition and the town’s most sought-after event of the season.
The sounds of classic and iconic movies echoed across the lake at Chetola Resort during the 28th annual event for this year’s Lights, Camera, Music! theme.
Sporting costumes from their favorite movies, music lovers and film enthusiasts poured onto the resort’s lawn in droves for the annual event. Guests decked out their tents with elaborate displays paying homage to their favorite scores, bringing each and every story to life.
The evening featured many special guests, including Appalachian State University’s Chancellor Sheri Everts, who was featured as a guest conductor.
The annual tent-decorating contest added an element of friendly competition to the festivities as folks enjoyed their own picnics or a variety of dinner options offered by the resort.
In all its years, the event has never seen rain, but the crowd was stirred by a light drizzle that threatened to make its way over the lawn on Friday. Many in the crowd broke out their umbrellas just in case, but sunshine and good times prevailed as an evening of perfect weather ensued despite a chance of rain.
Local jazz favorites Maureen Renihan and Friends took to the stage for an opening performance that began a night of memorable music. The venerable Symphony of the Mountains followed with the evening’s featured performance, playing tunes from popular films including Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Star Wars, The Wizard of Oz, Jurassic Park, Fiddler on the Roof, Gone with the Wind, Mission Impossible, Forrest Gump, E.T. and more.
The Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce hosts the annual event.
