Mrs. Carolyn F. Carr, age 77 of Boone, passed away Sunday, February 18, 2018.
She is survived by her husband, Gordon L. Carr, Ph.D., a step-daughter, Shannon Carr, M.D. and spouse Mark Ward of Albuquerque, New Mexico, two step-sons, John C. Carr, Ph.D. and wife Michelle of Raleigh, N.C., and Patrick T. Carr and Angela of Nashville, TN. One brother, Dan A. Pounders and wife Lynn of St. Charles, MO. Also survived by two grandchildren, Garrett and Chandler Carr.

Aaron James A. J. Arsenault, age 27, of Castle Ford Road, Boone, passed away Saturday, February 17, 2018 at his home. A. J. was born January 23, 1991 in Watauga County. He was always the free spirit looking at the brighter side of life. A. J. loved his family and friends unconditionally. He was a kind and amazing husband, son, brother, and friend to all who knew him. His personality made people smile and he was always fun to be with.
A. J. is survived by his wife, Marrion Arica of the home; his mother, Paula Arsenault of Boone; brother, Zach Arsenault of Radford, VA.; grandfather, Carl Eldreth of Boone; two aunts, Lisa Taylor and husband, Michael, of Jacksonville, and Diane Wiles and husband, Randy, of North Wilkesboro; and his uncle, Doug Eldreth and wife, Tracy, of Lenoir. He was preceded in death by his father, Tony Arsenault; maternal grandmother, Libby Walton Eldreth; and Paternal grandmother, Lynda Arsenault.
Funeral services for A. J. Arsenault will be conducted Thursday afternoon, February 22, 2018 at 2 oclock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Chapel, officiated by Rev. J. D. Walton. The family will receive friends Thursday from noon until 2 oclock, one hour prior to services, at Austin & Barnes. Graveside services will follow in the Howell Cemetery. (June 26, 1928 – February 17, 2018)
Willena Dance Hunter, 89, of Banner Elk and formerly of Clemson, South Carolina, passed away February 17, 2018.
Mrs. Hunter is survived by her son, Jerry Hunter and wife, Sharon, of Zionville; her daughter, Beth Hunter Cook and husband, Jim, of Michigan; two sisters, Barbara Beaver and husband, David, and Martha Graham and husband, Ray, all of Charlotte; and one brother, Joe Dance and wife, Yvonne, of Waynesville. Four grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
A memorial services for Mrs. Hunter will be held at a later date in Clemson, South Carolina.

Mrs. Bernice B. McGuire
(November 29, 1926 – February 14, 2018)
Bernice Brown McGuire, age 91, of Sugar Grove, passed away Wednesday, February 14, 2018 at The Foley Center at Chestnut Ridge, Blowing Rock, NC. Born November 29, 1926 in Watauga County, she was a daughter of Grady and Alice Greene Brown, and step-daughter of Verlie Brown. Weighing only 2 1/2 pounds at birth, Bernie began life the way that she would live it—as a survivor and a miracle.
To all who knew her, Bernie embodied unconditional love. She lived a joyful life of kindness and compassion and was selfless to a fault. She was a homemaker and a farmer, and although she raised three children and three grandchildren, she was Mom and Granny to everyone who knew her. She was also a proud member of the National Honor Society and the heart of Baird’s Creek Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. McGuire is survived by two sons, Michael McGuire and wife, Luci, of Sugar Grove, and their children, Jake McGuire and wife, Lauren Hayworth, and Dr. Meghan McGuire and husband, Drew Meyer, and Mark McGuire and wife, Sue, of Sugar Grove, and their daughter Sarah Joanne McGuire. She was preceded in death by her husband, Talmage McGuire, and daughter, Jo Ann McGuire.
Funeral services for Bernice Brown McGuire will be conducted Saturday afternoon, February 17th, at 2 o’clock at Baird’s Creek Presbyterian Church, officiated by Rev. Keith Freeman, Rev. John Bollinger and Rev. Spears Alexander. Private graveside services will be in the Baird’s Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery. A reception will follow at the church.

Mrs. Carolyn Russell South Holman, age 83, of Banner Elk, passed away Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at Life Care Center Of Banner Elk.
Mrs. Holman is survived by, two daughters, Dolly Gloria of Linville, and Cathy Mcfadden of Crumpler, North Carolina, six sons, David South and wife Nancy, Fred South and wife Rose and Gordon South all of Todd, North Carolina, Howard South and wife Peggy and Randy South and wife Laura all of Boone, and Wade South and wife Loretta of Burnsville, North Carolina, one brother, Bill Russell and wife patty of Elmira, New York and one sister, Charlotte, Pennsylvania, and 24 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Glenn South, her father and mother, Wally Vivian Russell and Ethel Doris Brown Russell, one granddaughter, Raquel Gloria and one sister, Lynne Swanson.

Dennis Potter
February 24, 1946 – February 15, 2018
Dennis Potter, age 71, of Buckeye Road, Elk Park, passed away Thursday evening, February 15, 2018, at his home.
Dennis was born February 24, 1946 in Carter County, Tennessee, a son of the late Theodore Roosevelt Potter and Dovie Pearson Potter. Dennis was a member of Stone Mountain Missionary Baptist Church and a retired stonemason. His work spanning all over Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee. He took great pride in a job well done. He taught the trade to both his sons along with many others. Though he had a great love for creating master pieces out of rock, his greatest love was his family. He loved each and everyone unconditionally. He had a way of making each child, daughter-in-law, grandchild, friend and neighbor feel like they were just a little more special than others. His unconditional love always stretched out his hand to strangers in need and folks down on their luck. He was certainly a good Samaritan to all.
Dennis is survived by his wife, Wanda Stines Potter of the home; two sons, Randy Potter and wife Patsy, and Jackie Potter and wife Brenda, all of Elk Park; five sisters, Dolly Harmon and husband Wayne of Butler, Mary Estep and husband Reverend Howard Estep of Elizabethton, Linda Potter, Gayle Ashley, and Betty Hill and husband Daniel, all of Johnson City; one brother, Larry Potter of Butler; a brother-in-law and best friend, Carl Cable of Elizabethton; one sister-in-law, Betty Jo Glover; three granddaughters, Miranda Stoeltzing and husband Josh of Roan Mountain, Kayla Potter of Blowing Rock, and Amber Hoilman and husband Cody of Linville; one grandson, Joey Potter of Elk Park, and a very special great-grandson, Parker Stoeltzing. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death three brothers, Ray Potter, Ralph Potter, and James “Red” Glover, and one sister, Gracie Potter Cable.
Funeral services for Dennis Potter will be conducted Sunday evening, February 18, 2018, at 7:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 6:00 until 8:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Buddy Street and Reverend Howard Estep. Graveside services and burial will conducted Monday morning, February 19, 2018, at 11:00 o’clock, at Stone Mountain Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery in Elk Mills, Tennessee.
The family will receive friends Sunday evening, from 6:00 until 7:00 o’clock, at the funeral home, prior to the services.

Wiley C. Martin
March 25, 1927 – February 16, 2018
Wiley C. Martin, age 90, of Ferncliff Road, Boone, passed away Friday morning, February 16, 2018, at his home.
Wiley was a family man who taught his children to put the Lord first, family second, and your fellow man third. He lived his convictions until his death. He loved his church family at Mount Vernon Baptist church and his faithful friends. He enjoyed playing golf, cards and travelling.
Most of all Wiley loved his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and his wife “Sweet Charlotte.”
Education was very important to Wiley. After graduating Beulah High School in 1945, he served in the US Navy until 1946. He attended Appalachian State Teacher’s College and graduated in 1956. He taught History and Physical education at Roaring River High School in Wilkes County.
After teaching, Wiley worked at Thompson Products in Cleveland Ohio before he became an insurance agent. Before his 30 year career with State Farm Insurance in Boone, Wiley was an agent with imperial life and then a District Manager for Western Southern life in Asheville and Winston Salem.
During his life Wiley was an adult Sunday school teacher, Chairman of the Deacons, Training Union Director, and active in the brotherhood at Greenway Baptist and Mount Vernon Baptist churches in Boone.
Wiley served on several board of advisors including Camp Joy, Gardner Webb College, and Wake Forest Baptist Seminary. He served on the executive board as Vice Chairman of Evangelism at the Southern Baptist Convention representing the Three Forks Association. He was an active lay minister and served as an evangelistic lay minister in Hawaii.
In his community, he was a member of the Rotary Club and Optimist Club. Wiley was on the Planning Board for the Town of Boone, and on the Chancellors Committee for ASU. He was a member of the Snow lodge and a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason.
Wiley will be missed by his family and friends but is now resting in the arms of his savior Jesus Christ.
Wiley is survived by his wife, Charlotte Banner Martin of the home; three daughters, Daphne Speer and husband Charlie of Boone, Angela Petrey and husband Douglas of Raleigh, and Andrea McDonough and husband Randy of Boone; eight grandchildren, Andy Wilson and wife Kelley of Boone, Amy Beane and husband Barry of Boone, Adam Petrey of Raleigh, Lauren Zimmerman and husband Mike of Raleigh, Brett McDonough and wife Meredith of Boone, Thomas McDonough and wife Allison of Boone, Charles Speer and wife Kate of Minnesota, and Laura Seastrum and husband Bill of Raleigh; seven great-grandchildren, Mic and Aidan Beane of Boone, Ethan and Taylor Zimmerman of Raleigh, and Colin Speer of Minnesota, and Lucas and Jack Wiley Wilson of Boone, and one brother, Ned Martin and wife Ivylyn of Mount Airy. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Claude Swanson Martin and Neeley Atkins Martin, and one sister, Fern Martin Holder.
Funeral services for Mr. Wiley C. Martin will be conducted, Monday, February 19, 2018, at 2:00 o’clock, at Mount Vernon Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 12:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Reverend John Zellner, Reverend Bud Russell and Reverend Gordon Noble will officiate. Entombment will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens Mausoleum.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 2:00 o’clock, at the church, prior to the service.
The family respectfully request no food or flowers.

Mrs. Shirley Brock Blake, age 74, of Keystone Drive, Boone, passed away Saturday, February 17, 2018 at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Shirley was born April 16, 1943 in Norton, Virginia, a daughter of late James Watson Brock and Hazel Ison Brock. “Mom was a special lady who became a wife, mother, and homemaker at the young age of fifteen.” She was a patient, loving mother to all her six children. She had such a loving heart and only saw the good in people. God decided he needed her because she would make a very special angel in Heaven.
Shirley is survived by three daughters, Jane Elizabeth Blake, of Jefferson, North Carolina, Lisa Blake, of Brownstown, Michigan and Billie Jo Blake of Sugar Grove, three sons, James Jonathan Blake, of Hartsville, South Carolina, Barry Kent Blake and wife Jenny, of Louisville, Texas and David Andrew Blake and Wife Jerri Lynn, of Gainesboro, Tennessee, four sisters, Phyllis Roberts and Jean Shelton, both of Charlotte, North Carolina, Sara Brock and Nancy Ison both of Lexington, Kentucky, one brother, Joe Ison, of Lexington, Kentucky and fourteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Jackie Brock and one sister, Carol Wayne Brock.
A memorial service for Ms. Shirley Brock Blake will be conducted Thursday, February 22, 2018, at 6:00 o’clock at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel.

Pat is survived by one daughter, Holly Calloway and husband Andy of Morganton, North Carolina; one son, Chad Eggers and wife Brittany of Avery County; three granddaughters, Sidney Eggers, Addison Eggers, and Maggie Calloway; four grandsons, Noah Eggers, Hudson Eggers, Andy Calloway, and Jimmy Calloway; three brothers, Mike Eggers and wife Linda of Banner Elk, Raymond Eggers and wife Barbara of Banner Elk, and Sam Eggers and wife Jan of Leesburg, Florida; his girlfriend, Barbara Church of Banner Elk, and two sisters-in-law, Jane Eggers of Banner Elk and Brownie Eggers of Valparaiso, Indiana.

Julian Rupert Flaherty, age 85, of Newland, North Carolina passed away on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at Cranberry House in Newland, NC.
He was born on May 5, 1932 in Wake County, North Carolina, a son of the late Julian Bailey Flaherty and Margaret Holden Flaherty.
He was preceded in death by his Parents.
He enjoyed playing golf, and going to the beach and the mountains. He was an avid Wake Forest supporter.
