Woman Charged w/ DUI, Felony Hit-and-Run in Fatal Accident After Striking Pedestrians on 105

An 18-year-old woman has been charged with felony hit and run and a DUI after a fatal accident occurred late Friday night/early Saturday along N.C. 105 near Boone.

Driving a pickup truck, Makala O’Brien allegedly hit two pedestrians who were walking from a party at Dove Acres. A deputy with the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office arrived on the scene to find one of the males dead in the road and another male in critical care but talking, according to a shift report from the department.

Adam Greer, 26, of Zionville died at the scene and Tim Watson was the male found in critical condition, according to media reports.

As the State Highway Patrol processed the scene, deputies received a call that two females, O’Brien and a 15-year-old girl, matching the description of those in the truck that fled the scene of the accident were hitchhiking into Tennessee. The deputies tracked down a motorist that picked up the two girls, and that person led investigators to an apartment in Mountain City, where he dropped them off, according to the WSCO report.

Dave Faherty of WSOC-TV reported that the truck, which was found at skating rink, was impounded as blood was found on the hood.

“The 2 females were located and had admitted to being at a party on Dove Acres,” according to the report, which noted that they agreed to the Tennessee law enforcement officials that made first contact with the females to come back to North Carolina and speak with the State Highway Patrol.

Both of the women gave written statements and the driver was arrested for DWI. O’Brien has a court date set for Sept. 8.

Graveside services and burial for Greer will be conducted Thursday morning, Aug. 10,, at 11 a.m., at the Greer Cemetery in Creston.
