Mountain Home Music Presents The Pipefitters at its Annual St. Patrick’s Day Concert March 18

The Pipefitters featuring John Hyers, Jack Devereux and Sean Sutherland will perform at Joe Shannon’s Mountain Home Music at the Saint Paddy’s Day concert this Saturday, March 18th at the American Legion Hall in Blowing Rock.

What better way to warm the heart and cheer the spirit after this week’s winter blast than to celebrate Saint Paddy’s Day with some hot traditional Irish music! Joe Shannon, founder of Mountain Home Music, was a lover of all things Irish and embraced his Irish heritage.

Join us in honoring his memory as Joe Shannon’s Mountain Home Music presents its annual “wearing of the green” event this Saturday, March 18th at the American Legion Hall in Blowing Rock. The concert features The Pipefitters – John Hyers, Jack Devereux and Sean Sutherland – a trio of superb young musicians who are stalwarts of the east coast Irish pub session scene and who all currently reside in Western North Carolina.

Relying on a common repertoire and attentive listening rather than written music and deliberate arrangements, the Pipefitters give listeners an authentic experience of traditional Irish music as it is played in Ireland. Drawing on a deep knowledge and respect of tradition, they play adventurous and good humored music.”

Sean Sutherland, originally from Woburn Massachusetts, plays guitar, bouzouki and tenor banjo, as well as supplying most of the Pipefitters’ vocals. He has played Irish music for over twenty-five years, and has shared the stage with such luminaries as Tommy Peoples and Paddy Keenan. Living in Ireland, Maine, and Colorado before settling in Madison County, Sutherland has earned his reputation as a formidable accompanist.

Fiddler Jack Devereux was born in Asheville, but he spent long stretches of time in Ireland as a child, visiting his father’s family there. He grew up playing Irish music, as well as old time and bluegrass, and is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music in Boston. While in Boston, Devereux immersed himself in that city’s Irish music scene. He has appeared on stage alongside musicians such as Liz Carol, Darol Anger and, and currently tours with the bluegrass band Town Mountain.

Flute and whistle player John Hyers was originally drawn to the music when he encountered the playing of Joanie Madden, of Cherish the Ladies, while on a trip to Ireland. He is influenced by progressive players Michael McGoldrick and Kevin Crawford, as well as more traditional flautists such as Seamus Tansey and Frankie Kennedy.

“JSMHM is excited to kick off its 2017 concert series by hosting the Pipefitters at the Blowing Rock American Legion Hall”, says director Rodney Sutton. “This recently renovated building is a new venue for JSMHM and we look forward to holding more concerts in this warm and inviting space. It has wonderful views of the pond below from its expansive floor to ceiling windows leading to the back deck, plus there is ample parking with great handicap access”, Sutton added.

The concert begins at 7:30pm – doors open at 7. The American Legion Hall is located at

333 Wallingford Rd, downtown Blowing Rock about 2 blocks off Main Street, down below the city park. Please note the special ticket pricing for this concert only – all tickets are $10.
