At September’s regularly scheduled meeting, the Boone Town Council denied a planned development rezoning of the proposed mixed-use Rivers Walk project slated for the old Southern States property at the corner of Poplar Grove Road and Waters Street.

The development is proposed to feature 380 beds in 151 units and a 199-vehicle parking deck. The budget also has a $35 million ballpark budget.

“The council’s denial of the project followed a unanimous recommendation from the Planning Commission on Sept. 12 to approve the project,” the Watauga Democrat reported following the meeting. “But several council members said they didn’t feel the planned development was designed for projects that could be approved under other processes, including existing zoning districts and conditional district rezoning.”
