Schools in Avery and Watauga counties are closed for the third day in a row this week because of snowy weather and slick road conditions in both counties.

Today is day three of the three-day snow event, according to RaysWeather.com, and accumulations are likely to settle at forecasted numbers once all is said and done this evening or in the morning.

The High Country was forecasted to receive any where from a dusting to a foot of snow, depending on whether the location was on the eastern part of the Blue Ridge Mountains or near the Tennessee-North Carolina line.

“You’ll hear a few mountaintop reports of over one foot tomorrow, I’m sure. In spite of snow showers and flurries continuing off and on through tonight, most of the region will pick up no more than one inch (dusting at most on the eastern edge of the mountains). However, higher elevations along the western escarpment could see another one to three inches by tonight,” according to RaysWeather.com.

The National Weather Services “winter weather advisory” expires at 7 a.m. on Thursday, and a “wind chill advisory” is in effect from midnight tonight until 10 a.m. tomorrow. Gusts of wind up to 40 mph and wind chills as low as five below zero are expected.

As for the Watauga County Schools, spokesman Marshall Ashcraft said that the WCS system has used up a net of six snow days after discounting on Saturday school used up recently.

“I can’t predict whether we will have more Saturday school, but if we continue to have more snow days, it is likely we will try to have school on a Saturday when weather and the schedule permits.  Also remember that we only consider Saturday school for a week in which we miss one or more days of school – we will not use six-day weeks,” Ashcraft said.
