Boone Police Department Closes Death Case, Rules App Student’s Death Drug Overdose

On Sept. 25, 2015, the Boone Police Department began an investigation into the death of a 20-year-old male named, John Dallas Bunch IV. Mr. Bunch was a student at Appalachian State University.

This investigation began when Boone Police were called to respond to an unattended death at 451 Yosef Drive, Apartment U, Boone NC. Upon arrival, officers learned that Mr. Bunch was found deceased in his bedroom by friends. After an investigation investigators suspected an accidental drug overdose to be the cause of death. The case was turned over to the North Carolina Medical Examiner’s Office.

The Medicolegal Autopsy Report has been released. This report confirmed Boone Police Investigators’ suspicions. Mr. Bunch’s cause of death was listed as, “Acetyl fentanyl and alprazolam toxicity.”

“The loss of life is always tragic, but when we lose someone at such a young age it’s heartbreaking. Our thought and prayers go out to Mr. Bunch’s family and friends,” Boone Police Chief Dana Crawford said.
