Pics of Slick Road Conditions in High Country

The roads are a bit slick on Wednesday afternoon as it’s been snowing all day, but the NCDOT and municipal road maintenance programs have been hard at it to keep the roads as safe as possible.

The State Highway Patrol has been responding to a number of wrecks due to the slick road conditions. At about 3 p.m., Sgt. Matt Gunner and Sgt. Smith with the State Highway Patrol said that a dozen or so wrecks had occurred in Avery and Watauga counties since about noon.

Smith, for example, noted that the State Highway Patrol was four wrecks behind as far as responding time. He noted that this was an “above-average” amount of wrecks that were obviously attributed to the slick conditions caused by the snow. Gunner mentioned that the roads were snow-covered when he was out on the road in Burnsville.

The High Country is currently under a winter storm watch as two to four inches is forecasted to fall on Wednesday. This, of course, is the “appetizer,” as RaysWeather.com noted, before a much bigger storm arrives on Thursday evening.

Tomorrow’s storm is expected to last through Saturday and one foot to two feet of snow is forecasted to fall, according to the National Weather Service.

Avery County Schools already cancelled classes for Thursday. Watauga County Schools has yet to make an announcement for Thursday as of Wednesday at 5 p.m. See some weather photos from around the High Country below:
