Gas prices continue to slowly decline in the High Country.

Around the New Year, the price per gallon was about a nickel higher than it is today. According to NorthCarolinaGasPrices.com the Carolina Petro next to University Hall Drive in Boone has the lowest prices in the Boone area at $1.84 per gallon.

Gas began selling under $2 in December.

Banner Elk stations in Avery County are selling gas in the mid $1.80 range, similar to those in Boone and surrounding Watauga County. Meanwhile, Roan Mountain, which has a lower gas tax in Tennessee, is selling gas for about $1.67, a number that hasn’t changed in the past two weeks.

According to the AAA Fuel Gauge Report, one gallon of gas in North Carolina is averaging about $1.87. This compares to the national average of regular gas that sits at about $1.93 per gallon.
