Winterfest Parade Puppet Workshop at BRAHM Jan. 4
Puppets are an aspect of our history, from marionettes to the Muppets. In their many forms they have represented different customs and traditions and are valuable educational tools. Children can believe and relate to them, and puppets can provide an essential link between learning and play, which makes them wonderful teaching tools. They are also an interactive way to introduce narrative to even the most reluctant reader.
In this class, children will choose a character from a chosen folk tale, and construct their own, largescale puppets. They will get to breathe life into the puppets they build by animating their puppets in the Winterfest Snowflake Parade on January 30 2016 at 3 p.m.

Julie DelRosso is a local artist and mother who has worked in puppet and set design for stop motion animation in film and television productions. She earned a BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York City, and she has worked on many art projects with children in a variety of media – from clay to animation. She believes in the power of art to inspire and affect young lives!
Miami Artist Quinlivan to Paint Live at Studio 140 Dec. 29-Jan. 3
Miami-based artist Brian Quinlivan will be painting live at Studio 140 in downtown Banner Elk from Dec. 29 through Jan. 3. Influenced by artists such as Salvador Dali and M.C. Escher, he incorporates surreal, realistic and abstract elements to create his work. Each piece is a combination of media- including watercolor, ink, graphite, acrylic, crayon, pastels and airbrush- to achieve the desired results.
After exhibiting earlier this month in Miami during Art Basel week, Brian painted with the young patients at the Nicklaus/Miami Children’s Hospital. Brian along with others including NBA Hall of Famer Alonzo Mourning and disco/R&B legend Gloria Gaynor volunteered on behalf of the Michael Fux Foundation. The following weekend his “Star Wars” painting that he created in Banner Elk during the Wooly Worm festival was raffled off to benefit the Miami Children’s Museum.
Using a technique known as anamorphic drawing, Brian draws and paints images that appear to leap off the canvas, floor or wall, creating an optical illusion fooling the viewer. He will be unveiling his latest anamorphic shark painting this week. Come by for a unique photograph opportunity with it.

Free iLASIK Seminar at Graystone Eye on Jan. 12
Graystone Eye and Refractive Surgeon, R.E. “Trey” Oursler, will host a free seminar on Tuesday, January 12th at 6 pm on the lower level of their Hickory office. Graystone Eye is located in the McDonald Crossing business park near the intersection of McDonald Parkway and Tate Boulevard.
Participants will learn about vision correction procedures including iLASIK, advanced technology lens replacement options, and KAMRA, a new option that reduces dependence on reading glasses.
All participants over the age of 18 will receive a certificate valued at $500 toward either procedure, and be eligible to win a $1000 discount certificate to be given away at the end of the presentation.

Shrine Club to Host NYE Masquerade Ball on Dec. 31
The Appalachian Shrine Club is excited to announce the 2nd Annual Shriner’s Masquerade Ball on New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2015 from 9pm-1am. The Masquerade Ball will be held at the Boone Golf Club in the Fairway Restaurant. Tickets are $60/per person and include heavy hors d’oeuvres, a drink ticket and a champagne toast at mid-night. Tuesday Yoga at the Senior Center Begins on Jan. 5
The next session of Yoga classes are scheduled to meet from 6:15-7:15pm at the Lois E. Harrill Senior Center on Tuesdays beginning January 5th. Classes will also be held at the Western Watauga Community Center (WWCC) on Thursdays starting January 7th from 11am-noon. The instructor, Akal Dev Sharonne, has been a yoga practitioner and teacher for more than 30 years. Her classes are a delightful blend of humor, challenge and wisdom. Social Work Field Education Orientation at ASU Set for Jan. 11
NASW Members and Friends, You are invited to our Spring Field Education Orientation. We will be meeting on January 11th from 1:00 to 5:00 (1:00-3:30 for NASW members that do not have an intern) in Parkway Ballroom Room 420 in the Plemmons Student Union. Please park in Rivers Street Parking Deck and walk over to the Student Union. You will be given a parking pass that you can use to “pay” when you leave the parking garage.
