April 3, 2013. Appalachian State University’s 12th annual Diversity Celebration, featuring music, food and more, will be held April 9 in Plemmons Student Union from 3-9 p.m. All events are free and open to the public.
Appalachian’s seventh Annual People of the Planet Soccer Tournament will kick-off the event on April 7 at Watauga High School. Adult and youth teams are playing in the match. The tournament’s schedule can be found at www.cs.appstate.edu/soccer.
Activities for the Diversity Celebration include a wide variety of local and international music, food, dancing and crafts. Performances will include: Grandfather Mountain Highlanders Pipeband, Boone Scottish Country Dancers, Mariachi Mexico 2000, Carolina Klezmer Project, Bam Jazz, Country Magic Cloggers, Lost Jewels, Entropy Dance Crew, Hip Hop Oasis (H20), Eya! Afrolachian Drum and Dance, Rick Ward, Blue Ridge Kung Fu Arnis Academy, App Ki Bhangra, Appalachian Gospel Choir, Alma de Candela, Davidson River Taiko, Dollar Brothers, Sons of Bluegrass and Elkland Art Center.
The Diversity Celebration’s foods of the world will showcase Italian arancini, Caribbean cassava chips, Eastern European chocolate babka, Hawaii huli huli chicken, Korean soo jong gwua and Mediterranean tapenade crostini.
Community members who use the Rivers Street parking deck may request a free parking pass at the celebration. Other free parking is available after 3 p.m. in the Rivers Street bike lanes, in the Belk Library and Information Commons parking deck and elsewhere on campus after 5 p.m. A shuttle bus will run every half hour between 2:30-9 p.m. from the stadium parking lot to Plemmons Student Union. Limited parking will be available in the Stadium Lot beginning late afternoon.
