Although winter weather and scheduling issues kept some schools from participating in this year’s events, Math Counts teams from Hardin Park and Green Valley took part in regional competition in Hickory on Feb. 24.  Hardin Park finished second in that event and became the first local team to make it to state competition, which was held in Durham March 20. The Green Valley team was coached by Gail Richards, the Hardin Park team by Dr. Eric Marland of ASU and Luke Tunstall, a mathematics graduate student at the university.

On Monday, Kimberly and Dr. Eric Marland were thanked by the Board of Education for their initiative and leadership in offering Math Counts to WCS students and their commitment to advancing mathematics instruction in Watauga County. Dr. Marland, a mathematics professor at ASU, used a moment at the podium to praise WCS teachers as “extremely dedicated and incredibly knowledgeable.”

“It would be a shame not to support them,” Marland said.
