10th Annual Tom Moore 5k Raising Awareness for Huntington’s Disease on April 11 at ASU

Students at Appalachian State University are planning the 10th Annual Tom Moore 5k raising awareness for Huntington’s Disease Society of America. The 5k will be held April 11th, 2015, 9 a.m., at the Boone Greenway in honor of a High Country Resident, Tom Moore.

Tom Moore is a local Boone resident and former director of Resort Area Ministry who was diagnosed with Huntington’s Disease fourteen years ago. Tom’s father and brother have already succumbed to the disease. Tom is very passionate about spreading knowledge of this disease in hopes of research and finding a cure. In this spirit, Tom teamed up with Appalachian State University ten years ago to create this 5k walk/run with students, as an outreach fundraiser that promotes his personal goals of awareness and support. All proceeds from the 5k walk/run will be invested into the research of treatment and cure for Huntington’s Disease.

Huntington’s Disease is a hereditary, degenerative disorder that slowly diminishes a person’s ability to think, speak, or walk. Eventually, patients are completely dependant on others for their care. Currently, there is no cure for this disease, only medication to lessen the symptoms. The Huntington’s Disease Society of America is a voluntary organization with the mission of spreading awareness about this tragic disease and supporting patients and families. Together we can make a difference.
