LETTERS / The “Defending Freedom” Refrain Is False

Dear Editor,

Marine General Smedley Butler said his Marines died for United Fruit Company’s control of Central America; General Butler pointed out that American participation in WW 1 produced 21,000 new American millionaires and billionaires. His book, “war is a racket” describes a few getting rich on the backs of millions of dead.

America is a militarized society. Our countless wars have killed, tortured, and maimed millions. At public events you’re asked to remember the sacrifices American “warriors” made in the “defense of our freedom”, because we’re exceptional.

The “defending freedom” refrain is false. It shows the power of state to indoctrinate “consumers”. America fights for money and power. Soldiers fight to protect their fellow soldiers. Periodically citizens go to jail for saying so.

This “defending freedom” noise is injected into everyone, from the time they enter government approved schools and by graduation, the indoctrination is complete. The programming is so complete that it doesn’t matter what America’s military does, it’s called “defending our freedom”.

Countries that couldn’t threaten America, but are insufficiently submissive to the Empire become targets. “Our government” invades, bringing death and destruction, to install a pro-American regime. Americans then honor soldiers who died or were damaged while “defending freedom” from an attack that never threatened. The indoctrinated mind applauds this. That’s what happened with Iraq, whose government never attacked America or even threatened to; no American died in Iraq “defending our freedom”. Look at Iraq now.

At least 58,000 Americans died in Vietnam. Vietnam never threatened or attacked America. “Our government” invaded Vietnam interfering in their civil war. Americans didn’t die there defending freedom. Many of those soldiers said that.

North Korea never attacked America. Panama and Grenada didn’t attack America. Our soldiers didn’t die defending “your freedom” there.

In WWI, a war between empires, Germany didn’t attack or threaten America. “Our government” chose to enter that disaster, using the slogans; “making the world safe for democracy” to “end all wars.” In WWI Americans didn’t die defending freedom or end any future wars. That war was the mother of many more.

Japan attacked Pearl Harbor because FDR imposed an oil embargo on Japan, froze Japanese bank accounts in America, and imposed humiliating terms in pre-war negotiations with Japan, all inviting Japan to “fire the first shot” bringing America into the war. Japan never was able to invade or occupy America.

Germany didn’t want war with America. Germany declared war on America after Pearl Harbor to keep its treaty obligations to Japan. Hitler was clearly moving east towards Stalin’s Russia. England/France declared war on Germany for invading Poland but not Russia who simultaneously invaded eastern Poland. Germany lacked the military means to cross the English Channel, let alone invade America.

This current hypocritical, horrifying, world mess is the result of the last century of avoidable wars, benefiting an evil, manipulative minority, killing uncountable millions. Survivors are weakened and destitute “consumers” who support the militaristic nationalism creating the mess.

“It is no coincidence that the century of total war coincided with the century of central banking.” – Ron Paul

248 armed conflicts after WW2; America started 201 (81%), killing 30 million. http://www.examiner.com/article/earth-248-armed-conflicts-after-ww2-us-started-201-81-killing-30-million

“Exceptional America, defending freedom” has never been accurate. We used similar propaganda in 1898 violently subjugating those we said we fought to free. American meddling can be clearly demonstrated by two “boating incidents”.

The Gulf of Tonkin “attacks”, excuse for the Vietnam War, never happened, testified to by secretary of war, McNamara, in the documentary; “fog of war”. It was created as the excuse for raising the stakes in a country we eventually ran from, with many dead and continuing suffering to this day.  That’s not “exceptionalism.”

Contrariwise, an American intelligence ship, the Liberty, flying the American flag, attacked by Israeli fighter jets and torpedo boats during Israel’s Six-Day War, repeatedly. Many Americans were killed and wounded but America made no military or public response.

This uneven policy application is appalling, but also instructive to those aware observers.

Al-Qaeda, Taliban and Iraq never invaded America. The 9/11 attacks “official conspiracy theory” are marketing: It was America’s Reichstag fire. The Empire created Iraq/Syria/Libya problems. After thirteen years the Taliban remain in Afghanistan. Iraq/Syria/Libya/Afghanistan has resources and pipeline routes.

Moscow is next. Those who oppose the lies aimed at war with Russia are verbally assaulted as the “patriotic consumer” always does. The lies are the same; the results always a disaster. Will Americans ever notice the reality around them and demand an end to the aggression?

Except for its wars against the South, Indians, Haiti, Spain, and various brown people, America has won few wars. Confederates, usually outnumbered, often defeated Union generals. The Soviet Union defeated Germany.

The Nazis viewed the soldier’s duty as some Americans do; fight his government’s war without question. German officials felt the same way about the civilian’s duty: Once government goes to war debate is over. It’s the citizen’s duty to rally to the government’s efforts, just like in America. There’s no honor in “our government”, and there’s no honor in serving it. Remember Nuremberg?

History has repeatedly shown that whenever one group regards itself as superior to others, after much death and destruction, it will die. When people recognize their indoctrination, the lies lose their power. Someday Americans might enjoy public events without the militarism.

Those who put Americans in danger never have to board the last rooftop helicopter. If you believe American exceptionalism you’ll believe anything. American’s sacrificed in our countless wars didn’t die defending freedom, the propaganda used to justify America’s never-ending wars. They died so the powerful could become more so.

America’s enemies are “our leaders” who tell “consumers” the “war on terror” gives them the right to remove the liberties guaranteed by the Constitution. Stop attacking countries that can’t possibly harm America any more effectively than “our government” does already. Show us the “freedom” allegedly saved.

“War is a racket. It always has been. It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives. A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of the people. Only a small “inside” group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few, at the expense of the very many. Out of war a few people make huge fortunes.” General Smedley Butler
