Artist Reception July 154-6pm

From landscapes in blues and greens to the soft pastels in his figurative paintings and drawings, Tony Griffin’s work on canvas or paper is truly inspiring. With a unique impressionistic style Tony brings the viewer into his works of art, onlookers feel as though they are there with him as he paints. The Art Cellar Gallery’s Feature Exhibition, 20 Years in Review, A Retrospective will focus on 20 years of Tony Griffin’s diverse works of art. Landscapes, structures, still lifes and figurative works in oil, walnut ink and graphite will fill the lower level gallery from July 12 to August 13. Tony Griffin will also be in attendance during the Artist Reception being held at the Art Cellar Gallery on Saturday, July 15 from 4 to 6pm.
In 1970, at the young age of 11, Griffin embarked on an artistic journey to Florence, Italy and it changed his life. While attending the American International School of Florence, Tony lived and apprenticed with fresco artist Ben Long. Griffin’s early artistic training was heavily influenced by Italian Renaissance masters. Tony attended the North Carolina School of the Arts and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. Griffin’s work has evolved from a deep-rooted understanding and appreciation of the academic approach to a more personal and direct interpretation of his experiences and surroundings.Tony is a perceptual painter; his work is based on observation and direct response. While Griffin remains faithful to the principles and ideals of his classical training, his work has developed into a looser, more confident voice – a testament not only to his skill, but to his personal vision.
