The Blowing Rock Art and Antiques Show and Preview Party Promises Four Days of Interesting Antiques from Aug. 2nd to Aug. 5th

By Elly Murray

The once a year spectacular Blowing Rock Art and Antiques Show at BRAHM is fast approaching, and this is one antique show that you don’t want to miss!  This is the 12th year that the BRAHM has hosted this incredible three-day show, and with such a wide range of pricing and antiques, there’s sure to be something for every individual budget and taste.

The excitement begins on Thursday, August 2nd with a Preview Party from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Tickets are $75, and a ticket to this event gets you priority access to all the vendor offerings, and according to Jasmin McFayden, the administrator of the event,  “an open bar and catered horderves.”

She also explains that, “The vendors will put out all of their merchandise, available starting Thursday at the preview party, and what’s on display then is what will be available through the duration of the show, through Sunday afternoon.”

McFayden says that everyone is welcome to attend this event, and that, “The preview party is a dress up event. However, the show itself on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, most tickets sell at the door, and we get all kinds of people coming through. A lot of people will probably just be visiting Blowing Rock for the day…There will be all different kinds of people, dressed in all different kinds of ways.”

The BRAHM has really tried to make this event affordable to anyone who would like to attend, which is why the vendors have such a wide range of prices, and why the tickets to the show are so affordable.

McFayden explains the ticket prices, “So a three day pass for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday is $15. Friday or Saturday is $8 if you want to attend just one of those days, and a Sunday single day ticket is $5. The admission cost makes it affordable for anybody, so I think it’s a pretty mixed audience who comes. And certainly antique collectors are anticipating this show from year to year, so we’ll definitely get people who are specifically interested in antiques, and then people who are just coming to check out what’s happening, just off the street.”

The vendors have also tried to make their range of pricing a lot broader, so they would have something available for everyone’s budget.  McFayden says that “We’re going to have vendors selling antique jewelry, handbags, print rugs, metalwork, furniture, and everything in between. Prices will range from one hundred dollars into the five or six thousand dollars. I know that they’re offering a range of pricing, to be accessible to a broad audience.”

She went on to say that, “While this is a highly anticipated antique show, and one that I believe has become very well known in the Southeast, they do offer high end merchandise, but at a variety of pricing. I’ve heard vendors say that they tend to come out the best if they do offer a range of pricing for everybody.”

McFayden also describes that in addition to having a wide variety of prices and items, the vendors are also from various places across the United States. She says that, “The majority of them are on the East coast. We do have one person (coming) from Ohio, one person (coming) from California.”

The great thing about this antique show is that there is absolutely no bidding involved. There isn’t a chance that you might not get what you want, because it’s not an auction. You just come in and buy antiques at the prices that they’re marked, directly from the vendors.

The people and staff of the BRAHM are incredibly excited for this event, and McFayden says that,  “The whole museum transforms for this show.”

She went on to explain that, ““All of our gallery spaces will be converted into vendor booths spaces. All of the art work exhibitions come down during this time, except for the permanent exhibit on Blowing Rock upstairs in the Stevens Gallery. I believe that will be closed during the event.”

A few of the new highlights for this event include two vendors who have designated their booths for antique repair. McFayden explains that, “One person will be repairing chipped glass and crystal and another vendor will be selling paintings as well as doing consultations and talks around painting restoration; that’s part of his business as well. The painting restorer is Old Sarum Gallery, out of Salisbury, and the glass and crystal repair person is called Chips Away.”

This is a once a year event that is sure to be entertaining and have a little something for everyone who attends. Come out to Blowing Rock and check it out!
