When you’ve never served in the military or had someone close who has, it’s easy to forget, or even not fully realize, what they’ve sacrificed. This Veterans Day, reach out to a veteran you know and let them know you appreciate them, or escort them to Boone Mall on Monday, November 12, for recognition of their service. The event will begin at 10:30 a.m.

The Veterans Day Celebration at Boone Mall is co-sponsored by the High Country Chapter of Military Officers Association of America, Boone Mall and the Watauga Community Band.

This year is the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Veterans Day. On November 11th in 1918 during the 11th hour of the day, WWI officially came to an end. Then, in 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a bill that proclaimed November 11 as Veterans Day.

This day is a time for the public to let veterans know we appreciate them for serving our country and fighting to keep our freedom and rights. Veterans aren’t thanked enough, so let’s set aside this day for doing exactly that.
