Versatile young violinist Kitty Amaral will present the next concert in the 2018 concert season at St. Mary of the Hills Episcopal Church in Blowing Rock on Sunday, May 13th at 3 pm.  Amaral, age 15, is making a name for herself in classical, jazz, bluegrass, swing, and Appalachian old-time music, and has already performed in such disparate venues as Carnegie Hall and the Grand Ole Opry.

She won the AADGT (American Association for the Development for the Gifted and Talented) gold medal in classical music at age 10, is a Virginia Folklife recipient, and three-time MerleFest Youth Ambassador.  Last summer, she was invited to perform at the renowned Newport Folk Festival in Newport, Rhode Island, and this summer will return to Newport on a full scholarship to the Berklee College of Music ‘Jazz Institute’ at the Newport Jazz Festival.  Amaral studies violin with Dr. Nancy Bargerstock and will enter Appalachian State University next Fall on a Hayes Endowment for Musical Excellence Scholarship. She already plays with the Appalachian State University Orchestra, and has twice been a featured soloist in the Marching Mountaineers’ half-time show at ASU football games.

For this concert, Amaral has chosen Bach’s Sonata No, 1 in g minor for solo violin, Mendelssohn’s Conerto in e minorSix Romanian Folk Dances by Bartok, and Ponce’s Estrellita as arranged by Jascha Heifetz.  This is certain to be a wonderful afternoon with a rising star in the music world!
