Halloween festivities are about to begin across Boone and other areas of the High Country Wednesday afternoon.

Boone Boo is happening in downtown Boone with a magic show by Twist the Balloon Man starting the event from 3:15-3:45 p.m. at the Watauga County Public Library.

A spooky and silly haunted house tour of the Jones House is happening from 4-6 p.m. as well as an Arts and Apple Activities with the Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture at the Watauga County Public Library from 4-6 p.m.

All the ghosts, goblins, pirates and princesses will hit the streets from 5-6 p.m. in downtown Boone for trick-or-treating before the night concludes with Spooky Stories at the Watauga County Public Library from 6-6:30 p.m. This event is for children ages 10 and up.

One of the highlights of trick-or-treating each year is a visit from the Hairy Fairy at Haircut 101.

“This was an outfit that I thought up back in 1984 and it has been a favorite of clients and staff since then. I can’t not wear this,” said owner John Mena. “Last year I went home after being at work all day in this outfit and changed and the kids started complaining when they came to the door asking for the hairy fairy.”

Over 75 merchants in downtown Boone are participating in the event.

Elsewhere, youngsters can enjoy trick-or-treating at the Boone Mall from 5-6 p.m. Watauga Parks and Recreation will also be on hand for fun games and activities in the center of the mall. Professional photos of the children dressed up will be available for a small fee.

The Banner Elk Trunk-or-Treat will be taking place from 5-8 p.m. at the Historic Banner Elk School. Face painting events are already underway if you want to arrive early. Children, pets and even adults come dressed up costumes for a fun trick-or-treat experience. The festivities include a costume contest for kids, and a separate contest for pets. There will also be a haunted house and hayrides.
