Boone-Based Educational Nonprofit to Host College Fair for First-Generation Students on Saturday, October 27

Achievement Through Liberal Arts and Sciences (ATLAS) is hosting a free college fair for high school students throughout the High Country on Saturday, Oct. 27, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Watauga County Agricultural Conference Center in Boone (252 Poplar Grove Rd). The theme is “Oh, the Places You’ll Go.”

The fair will host over 50 colleges and universities with respective alumni members, guaranteeing an insider’s guide on preparation measures. Students are encouraged to ask questions and engage with alumni. Further information about ATLAS as well as financial aid information will be provided. There will be free refreshments.

ATLAS is a Boone-based educational nonprofit organization that provides support and resources to prepare first-generation college students for success. According to its website, ATLAS’s mission is, “To provide high-achieving, first-generation students with the skills they need to successfully apply to and pay for a liberal arts and sciences education.”

ATLAS provides opportunities for professionals and current college students to volunteer and mentor those preparing for university.

“For this first fair, I asked people to represent their alma maters rather than soliciting volunteers,” Dr. Marjon Ames Zimmerman, executive director of ATLAS, said in regard to volunteering. “However, if anyone is interested in representing their schools, I’d be happy to connect them with the alumni office from their school and have them set up a table at the fair.”

If interested in mentoring, App State students can apply during the spring semester to find suitable matches.

“Professionals who would like to help out can contact me directly and they can come speak to our students about their experiences in education and their careers,” Dr. Ames said.
