Ballet Folklórico de México Brings Mexican Culture to the Schaefer Center on November 14

Appalachian State University’s performing arts series, “The Schaefer Center Presents…” continues its 2018-19 season with a performance by world-renowned ensemble Ballet Folklórico de México on Wednesday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. at the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts. For six decades, the company has presented dances reflecting the cultural traditions of Mexico, featuring authentic music and costumes, combined with inspired dancing that brings audiences to their feet. More information about this performance can be found at theschaefercenter.org.

Founded in 1952 by dancer and choreographer Amalia Hernández, Ballet Folklórico brings together the music, dance and costumes of Mexican folklore from pre-Colombian civilizations through the modern era. With its permanent home at the Palacio de Bellas Artes, one of Mexico City’s most historic venues, the company has developed choreography for 40 ballets, composed of 76 folk dancers who have performed extensively across Mexico and abroad.

The company will also perform a matinee for K-12 students from 10 surrounding counties as part of the APPlause! K-12 Performing Arts Series sponsored by Appalachian’s Office of Arts and Cultural Programs.
