This Saturday, Alta Vista Gallery will receive 25 new Impressionist oils by Sheila Hancock.  Her show, “Blue Ridge Skies,” will hang from June 18 through July 14Meet her at the gallery’s opening reception on June 23, from 11 to 5.  Bring friends to enjoy refreshments and an amazing art show!

Hancock has a long list of awards, including a permanent placement in the Governor’s Mansion.  Because she is such an expert at painting clouds, it seems that Hancock might actually know the answer to a question God asked Job, “Do you know how the clouds hang poised?”

Her new show includes a variety of sizes, ranging from canvases of 30 by 40 inches, down to small paintings only five inches wide.  Subjects include many scenes from the High Country, and much of the new work features our beautiful skies and clouds.  Hancock says, “When I paint a sky, I feel like I’ve ‘slipped the surly bonds of earth to touch the face of God,’ as Ronald Reagan said.”

Hancock is also known for her paintings of cows, especially the closeup “portraits” of their faces.  “Cows are such gentle, sweet creatures, and that can be seen in their eyes,” says Hancock.

Alta Vista Gallery hosts a new show monthly, and the public is invited to attend the opening receptions on the fourth Saturday of each month, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., to meet the artists and enjoy refreshments.

The July 28 reception will be “Contemporary Impressionist Oils by Joan Sporn.”

In its 28th year, Alta Vista Gallery represents over 100 artists in all media, including:  oils, acrylics, watercolors, prints, fine art tiles, stained glass, sculptures, Mangum Pottery, and the gallery owner’s debut novel, He Gave Me Barn Cats.
