All Ages Invited to Participate in Watauga County Arts Council’s Upcoming Open Exhibitions

The Watauga County Arts Council invites artists of ALL ages to participate in their upcoming open exhibitions. These theme-based exhibitions are designed to encourage artists who might not yet be ready for a full exhibition to share their work with the community. There are a variety of themes and mediums designed to appeal to a variety of styles, mediums, and interests. Participating adults must be members of the Arts Council in order to exhibit their work. Annual membership levels begin at $35.

Open Exhibitions designed to appeal to adults include:

‘PETAL PUSHERS”, an open exhibition of works of all mediums featuring a FLORAL theme during the month of June, 2018. The Arts Council is encouraging artists to not only submit paintings and drawings, but also such media as clay, fibers, metal, wood, and more. The show will be juried and there is a $10 submission fee per piece entered. Work must be submitted on May 31, June 1, or June 2.

‘GLUE IT DOWN! BUILD IT UP! COLLAGE AND FABRICATION EXHIBIT’ is a multi-media exhibition of collage and fabricated works which will be shown during the month of August.. There is no entry fee. Work must be submitted on August 2, 3, or 4th.

‘PLEIN AIR’ will enable artists who have painted in the great outdoors to share the results during the month of September. The Arts Council will soon be announcing a series of Mystery Plein Air Workshops. Participation in one of the plein air workshops entitles the artist to exhibit the work created in that workshop or the artist may pay a submission fee of $10 per piece entered. There will be prizes awarded. Work must be submitted on August 30, 31 or September 1.

‘HOLIDAY ORIGINALS’ is entering its 5th season of offering artists an opportunity to sell holiday themed merchandise and gift items to shoppers seeking unique, handmade gifts. The Arts Council will begin accepting work on October 31, November 1, and 2.   There are no entry fees.

Open Exhibitions for creative artists from toddlers through age 18 include:

‘FLOWER POWER’ – which is a companion exhibit to the Petal Pushers exhibit for adults. Any work of art, whether two-dimensional or three-dimensional, that includes flowers in its composition are accepted. There is no submission fee and multiple works may be submitted. Work must be submitted on May 31, June 1, or June 2 .

‘VILLAINS AND SUPERHEROES: COMIC ART’ allows kids to either share their renditions of favorite characters or to dream up their own. Any medium is acceptable and more than one work of art may be submitted. Work will be accepted July 5th-7th.

‘SEE ME IN SEPTEMBER’ is an opportunity to create a self portrait in any medium for exhibition in the month of September. Work will be submitted August 30, 31, and September 1.

‘CHANGING COLORS: FALL LANDSCAPES’ allows children to celebrate the changing seasons with paints, collage, or any other medium they choose. Work will be exhibited during the month of October and may be submitted on October 4th-6th.

All exhibits are celebrated with an opening event called 2nd Saturday Celebration of the Arts. This is a free, family friendly event which also features demonstrating artists, live music, and refreshments are served. The event is held each 2nd Saturday from 5:30-7:30 pm.
