Tamara Stamey Named Director of Elementary Education

Tamara Stamey

Oct. 11, 2012. Current Parkway School Principal Tamara Stamey has been appointed to the new position of director of elementary education for the Watauga County Schools and will transition to that position in early November.

Responding to her selection, Stamey said she is “excited and honored at the opportunity to serve our teachers and students in this new role.  I will truly miss the wonderful people that make Parkway School such a special place, but I look forward to helping our elementary grades teachers provide the best possible instruction for students from all across Watauga County.”

Stamey has been principal at Parkway since February 2011 and is in her eighteenth year with WCS.  Prior to becoming Parkway’s principal, she served as an assistant principal at Watauga High School for seven years and taught at Mabel Elementary for nine years.

Parkway School serves students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade and is a School of Distinction under the NC ABC’s school accountability model. The school has a total current enrollment of 522 students.

The search for a new principal at Parkway will begin immediately and Stamey’s successor is expected to be named sometime next month.

In other actions involving WCS central office personnel, the Board of Education has also approved the appointment of Debora Smith to a new position as employee benefits manager and NC WISE coordinator for the Watauga County Schools.  Among her other duties, Smith’s new role will include helping administer the transition from the NC WISE student information system to the new PowerSchool system that will be implemented in 2013.  Smith is currently working in the front office at Watauga High School and previously served as a substitute teacher for WCS.
