Oct. 2, 2012. RALEIGH – The excitement this week about a $202 million Powerball jackpot ended with the winning ticket sold in Iowa, but the sales around the jackpot as it grew to that size led to some big wins for North Carolina players and boosted the amount of money the N.C. Education Lottery will return this year for education.

The jackpot rolled over 11 times during the six weeks of sales. Initial estimates indicate sales will generate more than $6.3 million for education.

More than 223,000 tickets won prizes totaling more than $2.8 million in the 12 total drawings, including one $1 million prize. Retailers across the state earned more than $1.1 million in commissions from Powerball sales through the weeks the jackpot rolled.

The jackpot for Saturday’s drawing is an estimated $40 million if taken as an annuity or $25.7 million if taken as a lump sum. Wednesday’s Powerball drawing produced 28,646 winning tickets in the state. Prizes ranged from $4 to $10,000 and totaled $226,075. The Saturday, Sept. 22 drawing produced 24,066  winning tickets, totaling $176,881 with amounts ranging from $4 to $10,000.
