Jan. 8, 2015. Children attending Avery County and Watauga County Schools will have the day off on Thursday because of extreme winter weather conditions, the school systems announced.

From Watauga County Schools:

Due to worsening road conditions and extremely low temperatures, schools will be closed for students and it will be an optional workday for teachers on Thursday, Jan. 8.  School staff may report to work with a two hour delay.  The snow day program at Hardin Park will open at 9 a.m.

From Avery County Schools:

Due to dangerous road conditions in many areas of our county and temperatures below 0, the Avery County Schools will be closed for students on Thursday, Jan. 8. It is an optional workday for faculty and staff on a two-hour delay.

At this time, the YMCA will be providing “Snow Camp” for students in grades kindergarten through sixth grade at the YMCA from 7:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. Any changes will be posted to our website and updated on our snow number, 733-6006.
