Recent ASU Alumnus Receives Two Awards from the Broadcast Education Association 2012 Festival of Media Arts

March 11, 2012. Myke Scaffidi, a December graduate from Appalachian State University’s Department of Communication, has received top honors in the Broadcast Education Association (BEA) Festival of Media Arts.

Scaffidi won first place in the Commercial/Promo/PSA category for “Gorilla Tape Caper” and third in the Education Program/Documentary category for “Hillbilly Jazz: The Evolution of Bluegrass.”

The projects were part of a class assignment in Steve Smith’s Audio Production II class in the fall of 2011. Smith is a lecturer in the Department of Communication.

Appalachian communication students have placed in the top three or received an honorable mention for five consecutive years. This also marks the sixth year they have entered into the Educational Program/Documentary category and either won or placed. With these awards, the Audio II students have won a combined 23 national awards in six years.

“I am very happy for Myke and so proud of all of our students who work so hard at producing outstanding productions,” Smith said.

The BEA Festival of Media Arts is an international refereed exhibition and a national showcase for student work. Scaffidi will receive his award at the annual convention of Broadcast Education Association (BEA) in Las Vegas on April 15–18.
