Fifth grade Hardin Park students Ian Wilson, Mitchell Fowler, and Steele Neely have won the championship in the North Carolina Western Region of the elementary grades division of the Stock Market Game.

The team also placed 14th in the state out of 113 teams.  Each team in the competition is given $100,000 to build a diversified (and hopefully profitable) portfolio over the course of 10 weeks.

The Stock Market Game is an online simulation of global capital markets that engages students in the study of economics, investing and personal finance.  It is sponsored by the North Carolina Council on Economic Education (NCEE),

The team’s coach Emily Rothrock, K-5 AIG Specialist for Hardin Park, stated that “participating in this game is a valuable experience for students because it makes math concepts relevant in the context of a real world problem. Students learn to make decisions and take risks based on research and market predictions.  The game exposes students to career opportunities in finance and helps create a foundation for understanding investing.”
