Activities with high octane fun will be part of the Family Fun Festival on Saturday, May16.

A Family Fun Festival at Watauga High School on Saturday, May 16 will offer local families the chance to enjoy a great time while supporting the Extended Learning Center (ELC) afterschool program of the Watauga County Schools.

The event, which runs from 1-5 p.m., will feature games for children, a bouncy house, representatives of community service agencies, a raffle offering dozens of items and services, science and talent competitions for children, live music, a DJ, and food and craft vendors on site.

“This is going to be a wonderful afternoon for families and we hope everyone will come and enjoy the wide variety of games and activities that will be available,” said ELC Program Director Pam Shirley. Shirley noted that the event is especially appropriate for children of elementary school age. All children must be accompanied by an adult to provide supervision and ensure their safety.

Shirley stated that contributions from many sponsors were crucial to making the Family Fun Festival possible and “we deeply appreciate their support. It’s a great example of what an exceptional community we live in and of how people are committed to serving children and enhancing education in Watauga County. The partnerships we have here are the envy of other counties in our state and and they are a key part of what makes our schools so successful.”

Festival sponsors include Waffle House; Julia Tyson, DDS, PA; Jill Holmes; and more than 20 local restaurants.

The ELC program operates at all eight K-8 schools in the Watauga County Schools system, serving more than 300 students in grades K-5 each day. The program provides working parents a safe, high quality setting where their children can complete homework, receive tutoring, and participate in games and enrichment activities from 2:30-6:00 p.m. on school days. All program sites are licensed by the state and each has achieved a high rating on the state’s star rated licensing system.
