Jan. 24, 2014. With the cancellation of Friday classes for Avery County Schools and Watauga County Schools, kids in both counties didn’t have school for an entire week because of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, inclement weather and secondary road conditions icy and snow-covered following the snow storm.

This morning temperatures are in the subzero to low single-digit range across the High Country.

Counting Friday, both systems have missed a combined nine days of school, and each system is going about making up the missed days a different way. While Avery County Schools is considering adding 30 minutes to the school day, Watauga County Schools has already initiated  Saturday school.

Because Friday school was cancelled, Watauga will not hold Saturday school tomorrow.
