ASU Department of Communication to Offer Hybrid Online Advertising Degree Program

March 7, 2012. BOONE — Appalachian State University’s Department of Communication is launching a new hybrid, online-degree completion program for advertising majors. The program, designed to offer students classroom interaction and the convenience of online instruction, will begin in August.

The new hybrid advertising communication major is a degree-completion program. Students will transfer in to the program with general education credits, then develop their advertising expertise while completing the last two years of their undergraduate degree. The program is highly price-competitive and in many cases costs less than on-campus education.

“Our department’s new hybrid advertising program will support working individuals who want engagement and learning in a university setting, with online flexibility that complements a busy lifestyle,” said Dr. Thomas Mueller, assistant professor in Appalachian’s Department of Communication. “We’re providing a supported online learning environment that offers face-to-face interaction with professors and students, combined with an interactive online experience. It’s an effective way to earn a degree while maintaining commitments to home, family and jobs.”

The advertising hybrid program offers a well-rounded curriculum that builds student skills and confidence for the competitive marketplace. Classes include media graphics, copywriting, digital media production, media planning, international advertising and Internet communication, among others.

Seated classes and student group meetings will be held at the Appalachian State University Center at Hickory, which is housed in the Catawba Valley Community College East Campus. The new hybrid education model offers in-classroom instruction during the first and last class dates each semester, while other course work and instruction is offered via interactive online technology.
