Dr. David Fonseca, who most recently served as assistant superintendent for Watauga County Schools in Boone, N.C., has been hired to fill the same role for BCPS.

This past November, former Assistant Superintendent Milland Bradley unexpectedly resigned, along with Human Resource Director Jan Crump, which left two positions open in the system.

Fonseca began his career in education in Lincolnton, N.C. in 1992, and his classroom experience includes teaching and administrative experience positions at the elementary, middle and high school levels, according to a press release from BCPS Superintendent Larry Putnam.

Aside from serving in Watauga County, his previous work includes serving as assistant superintendent for the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools, principal of H.M. Arndt Middle School in Catawba County Schools, and assistant principal and teacher in Gaston County and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. He also is an adjunct professor at ASU Graduate School of Education, the release said.

In addition to his work as a teacher and administrator, he has been a bus driver, and a middle school and high school soccer and basketball coach.

Fonseca earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Veracruz in Veracruz, Mexico, a master’s degree in school administration from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and a doctoral degree in educational leadership from Appalachian State University. He completed post-doctoral studies at the Graduate School of Education at Harvard including the Leadership Institute for Superintendents in 2012, and most recently the Leading Education Systems Program in May of 2014, the release said.

Fonseca informed colleagues in the Watauga County Schools system that he wanted to be closer to his daughters.

He and his wife Kelle enjoy the outdoors, sporting events, traveling, and spending time with their children Jon, Meli and Gaby.

Fonseca was hired by former WCS Supt. David Kafitz, whose contract was bought out a couple years ago.

Marshall Ashcraft spokesman said that the school district hopes to announce “search/succession” plans next week.
