Appalachian State University’s Homecoming Weekend Starts Oct. 11 with Events, Football Game and More

Oct. 8, 2013. Appalachian State University Alumni are invited to celebrate “Yoself Loves the ’90s” at Homecoming Friday, Oct. 11, and Saturday, Oct. 12. Events include Friday night’s popular traditions plus Saturday tailgating and football at Kidd Brewer Stadium.

Pre-homecoming events began Sept. 25 with the 7th annual 1,200 Pint Homecoming Blood Drive in the Holmes Convocation Center. A total of 1,317 pints were collected. 

The National Pan-Hellenic Council will have a yard show on Thursday, Oct. 10, at 8 p.m. on the tennis courts by the Appalachian Athletics Center. This event is in lieu of the Council’s Step Show and After Party traditionally held after the football game. 

Friday, Oct. 11

Homecoming weekend begins Friday, Oct. 11, with the 7th annual Running of the Knob, a two-mile run to the top of Howard’s Knob, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Watauga County Library.

The Lip Sync Finals and Pep Rally event “Spirit Under the Stars” has been moved to Sanford Mall due to construction near Duck Pond Field. Lip Sync Finals begin at 6 p.m. with the pep rally and fireworks at 8 p.m. There will be no bonfire due to location change. 

The Friday Night Dance in Legends at 8 p.m. features the Craig Woolard Band playing beach and rock music. Heavy hors d’oeuvres will be served. Admission to the dance is $18 in advance and $20 at the door for alumni. The cost for students is $10 in advance, $12 at the door. You must be age 18 or older to attend. 

An AAAA Reception honoring Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc.’s 30th anniversary will be held at Mint Restaurant at 9 p.m. Admission is $5. There will also be a Gospel Celebration at midnight at the Rosen Concert Hall with free admission. 

Saturday, Oct. 12

Saturday’s events begin with the 5K Homecoming Run for Hunger at 8 a.m. at Clawson-Burnley Park on the Greenway Trail in Boone. Registration is $15 per person with proceeds benefitting the Hunger and Health Coalition’s Food Pantry program. 

A complimentary Appalachian Friends Breakfast will be held from 9-10 a.m. at McKinney Alumni Center with biscuits from Dan’l Boone Inn and coffee from Stick Boy Bread Company. All Appalachian alumni, friends and family are welcome. RSVP is requested. 

The Homecoming Parade in downtown Boone begins at 10:30 a.m. from Raley Hall parking lot on Rivers Street. The route runs west on Rivers Street, turns north on Water Street and follows King Street east through Downtown Boone. 

The Mountaineer Tailgate Party at Duck Pond Field will be held from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Kickoff for the football game against Sanford University is 3:30 p.m. 

After the game, Homecoming events continue with the Comedy Show at Legends at 8:30 p.m. Organizations and departments from around campus will host individual activities Friday and Saturday.
