He is one of the leading voices for anti-racisim in a country still plagued by old ideas. This will be how he sees race relations in America,” said Augusto Peña, Director of the Office of Multicultural Student Development at ASU.

Tim Wise grew up in Nashville, TN, as part of the privileged class. Peña hopes that with such a similar background to the marjority of students at Appalachian, Wise will be able to make a meaningful connection with the students through his speech.

“This could be a point for some of our students that they can become more aware about their place and themselves and the people around them,” commented Peña.

According to Peña, ASU has been considering Tim Wise as a speaker for the annual Diversity Lecture Series for a few years. Due to his proximity to campus this week, the school was had the chance to book him for a lecture. Now the whole community has the extraordinary opportunity  to hear what he has to say.

Each speech is fresh and current since Wise constantly incorporates new stories and examples from the things he encounters day to day. Tonight’s speech is sure to be one of a kind.
