School Board Meets Tonight at 7 p.m.; New Supt. David Kafitz to Deliver First Superintendent’s Report

By Paul T. Choate

July 9, 2012. The Watauga County Board of Education will meet tonight, July 9, at 7 p.m. for their monthly meeting. David Kafitz will be delivering his first Superintendent’s Report after taking over the position on July 1.

Kafitz was selected as the new superintendent on June 4, succeeding Dick Jones, a former superintended who was asked to come out of retirement and assume the position on an interim basis after Marty Hemric left for the superintendent position in Wilkes County in December 2011.

Katie Matthews, a first grade teacher at Valle Crucis School, will be recognized for being named with Watauga County Teacher of the Year back in May.

Following her recognition, several personnel will be discussed, followed by Kafitz presenting his pre-K program recommendation.

Ly Marze, WCS finance officer, will then take a few moments to provide budget information. The 2012-2013 is very similar to last year’s budget but does not include a $1 per hour pay increase for the after school program group leaders. The funds will be redirected to recruit and retain qualified personnel according to the meeting agenda.

WCS Facilities Director Dennis Ray will give an update on facilities — including updates on construction at several of the area elementary schools — as well as an update on Watauga High School’s progress in acquiring LEED certification.

The open portion of the meeting will conclude with public comments at approximately 8:15 p.m., after which the board will go into closed session until a projected 10:15 p.m. adjournment.

The meeting takes place at Margaret E. Gragg Education Center on Pioneer Trail, just off of Highway 194 North.
