12th Annual Empty Bowls Project Underway, Supper To Fight Hunger at WHS Takes Place Saturday, March 23

March 11, 2013. The 12th annual Empty Bowls Project is underway with the Empty Bowls supper set for Saturday, March 23, from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

An international project to fight hunger, Empty Bowls is a simple premise. Art students at Watauga High School have begun creating and collecting donated handmade ceramic bowls, soups and bread from area restaurants to serve as a meal. (See the menu below.)

Guests donate at least $15, which goes to the Hunger & Health Coalition. In return for the donation, folks get to eat the food and keep their empty bowls. Last year, the Empty Bowls Project at WHS raised $8,100 – and in the previous 11 years, more than $56,000 for the Hunger & Health Coalition.

The event features a silent auction featuring donated merchandise and gift certificates from area businesses, restaurants and artists and the Watauga High School String Band, Chorus, Orchestra, Jazz Band and Theatre classes will provide the music and entertainment.

Aside from the food and pottery, students are involved in the project in a variety of ways. For example, WHS sophomore Caitlin Barrier designed and created a marvelous poster advertising the event (See image at right) and students in a WHS food preparation class will be serving up their own broccoli cheddar soup.
