11th Annual Empty Bowls Supper to Benefit Hunger & Health Coalition Held at Watauga High School March 24

By Paul T. Choate

March 22, 2012. BOONE – The 11th annual Empty Bowls Supper to benefit the Hunger and Health Coalition will be hosted at Watauga High School on Saturday, March 24, from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m.

In the past 10 years, the Empty Bowls Supper has raised over $47,000 and 100 percent of the proceeds go to the Hunger and Health Coalition.

The soup and bread supper signifies simple meals and the empty bowl you get to keep signifies the empty bowls of those battling hunger around the world.

This year’s supper includes bowls and art from Watauga High School art students of Shelton Wilder, Lori Hill, Susan Dunn and Whit Whitaker. Also featured are bowls and art from Watauga Elementary School art students of Dacia Trethewey and Jill Huffman, as well as Ashe County High School art students of Pat Morrison.

Many of the area’s professional potters are also donating bowls as they have in all the previous years.

Students & teachers from the Appalachian State University “Michael R. Patricelli Crafts Enrichment Program” are also making and donating bowls.

Despite being a simple meal, however, this year the supper has a very diverse menu of soups donated by area restaurants (see menu below).

There will also be live music and a silent auction at this year’s event.

The musicians are participants in the Watauga County Arts Council Appalachian Music Studies. They are the “Junior Appalachian Musicians” under the leadership of Cecil Gurganus.

The silent auction will feature items, gift certificates and services from several local High Country businesses. Some of the items for auction are: teapots from the Appalachian Crafts Enrichment program, a Boone Bike tune up, a Magic Cycles tune up, Cheap Joe’s gift certificates, a Daniel Boone Inn gift card, a Makoto’s dinner coupon, and merchandise from Mast General Store, Dancing Moon, Hands Craft Gallery, Pandora’s Mailbox and Gladiola Girls, plus art and craft items by many local artists.

Tickets to the event are $15. For more information, or to purchase tickets, call (828) 264-2407.
