May 3, 2012. On Thursday May 3, 2012, Watauga County Sheriff’s Office Special Operations Unit personnel responded to the Elk Knob State Park in reference to a possible clandestine laboratory dumpsite. Upon inspection officers were able to confirm the presence of items consistent with the manufacture of methamphetamine. These items were initially discovered by maintenance personnel that work at the state park and they reported it to the park rangers, who in turn, reported it to the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office.
