Boone Police Department Arrests Two Shoplifters; More than $3,700 of Merchandise Stolen from 5 Stores

April 3, 2012. The Boone Police Department reports the arrest of Carl Pottschmidt, age 41 of Conover, and Michael Mehaffey, age 41 of Claremont. Their arrest resulted from a citizen complaint of possible shoplifting at Walgreens on Sunday, April 1.

Officers responding to the complaint discovered that Pottschmidt and Mehaffey had over $3,700 in stolen merchandise in their possession.  The stolen items consisted of antacids, shaving razors, antibiotic ointment, toothpaste, and over the counter medications.  The officers’ investigation revealed that the duo had been in CVS Pharmacy, Harris Teeter, Rite-Aid, Food Lion, and Walgreens before they were apprehended.

Carl Pottschmidt and Michael Mehaffey were each charged with two counts of felony larceny and three counts of misdemeanor larceny.  They were brought before a Watauga County Magistrate where they were detained on $10,000 secured bonds with a shared court date of May 5, 2012.
