Watauga County Sheriff’s Office Issues Warrant for Man Poaching Ginseng

September 4, 2018 A call to the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office about a trespasser turned into an investigation about possible ginseng poaching in Todd. According a press release from the sheriff’s office, a call reported a man trespassing on private property in the Todd community on Tuesday, August 7. After calling law enforcement, the landowner confronted the trespasser who has been poaching ginseng on the owner’s property. The suspect then fled on foot prior to the officer’s arrival after throwing down the ginseng roots that he had dug out. The suspect then abandoned his vehicle nearby which was later seized by Watauga County Deputies. Following an investigation by Detective Matt Rollins of the Criminal Investigation Unit, a felony warrant for the attempted larceny of ginseng was issued for Mathew Scott Miller. By Nathan Ham

Boone Police Expose Statewide Credit Card Fraud Operation


August 22, 2018 On Monday night, August 20, Boone Police apprehended two suspects of a nationwide credit card fraud operation, with international implications. This investigation began after receiving information from a local bank that bank officials had observed suspicious activity at one of their ATM machines in Boone. Norris Felton McLoyd, 48, and Yeneyder Del Socorro Norris, 42, of 1927 Fuller Mill Road North, Thomasville, North Carolina, were each initially charged with three felony counts of Financial Transaction Card Forgery. They are both lodged in the Watauga County Jail under $10,000 secured bond. More charges are pending.

Boone Man Leads Police on Chase Through Valle Crucis Monday Afternoon


July 31, 2018. On July 29, 2018, at approximately 3:52 PM, Boone Police attempted to stop a vehicle that was driving in a reckless manner through an accident scene on NC Highway 105. The vehicle fled out the NC 105 Bypass leading officers on a chase over backroads through Valle Crucis ending on Watauga River Road where the vehicle pulled over. Norman Charles Simmons, White, Male, 55, of Laurel Fork Road, Boone, was arrested and charged with the following offenses: Felony Fleeing to Elude Arrest, Driving While Impaired, Driving with a Revoked Driver’s License, Exceeding the Posted Speed Limit, Careless and Reckless Driving, Stop Sign Violation and Operating a Motor Vehicle with an Open Container of Alcohol.

Boone Police Department: Hagaman Facing Two Additional Felony Charges


July 16, 2018. Two more additional felony charges have been added in the case against Michael Justin Hagaman, 39, of Howards Creek Road in Boone. On Wednesday, June 6, 2018, the Boone Police Department, Watauga County Sheriff’s Office and State Bureau of Investigation conducted an investigation of a Boone man for the Possession and Distribution of Child Pornography. The Boone Police Department, Watauga County Sheriff’s Office and North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation are members of the North Carolina Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, which is continually engaged in proactive and reactive investigations and prosecutions of persons involved in child abuse and exploitation of children involving the internet.

Boone Police Charge Man with Attempting to Use a Counterfeit $100 Bill


June 27, 2018. On June 26, Charles Wayne Bolick, 55, Brook Hollow Road, Boone, was charged with Felonious Possession of Counterfeit Currency and Felonious Attempting to Obtain Property by False Pretense. Mr. Bolick was taken before a Watauga County Magistrate where a $10,000 secured bond was set pending a July 31, 2018, appearance in Watauga District Court. These charges resulted from Mr. Bolick attempting to pass a counterfeit bill at Benchmark Provisions in downtown Boone.     This coincides with the Boone Police Department seeing a recent influx of counterfeit $100 bills. The bills that have been located have Chinese writing on front and back. They also have lines across one of the corners of the bill, both front and back.

Boone Man Arrested on Child Pornography Charges


June 11, 2018. On Wednesday, June 6, the Boone Police Department, Watauga County Sheriff’s Office and State Bureau of Investigation conducted an investigation of a Boone man for the Possession and Distribution of Child Pornography. The Boone Police Department, Watauga County Sheriff’s Office and North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation are members of the North Carolina Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, which is continually engaged in proactive and reactive investigations and prosecutions of persons involved in child abuse and exploitation of children involving the internet. As a result of this investigation, Michael Justin Hagaman, 39 years-of-age, of Howards Creek Road, Boone, was arrested and charged with 10 counts of 2nd Degree Sexual Exploitation of a Minor.
