Household Hazardous Waste Collection

On Aug. 23, the annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection day was held in Avery County.  The Avery County Sheriff’s Office collected approximately 10,000 dosage units of across the counter and prescription drugs as a result of this effort. Since the prescription drug box has been in place for the public to use over the past three months about 75 gallons of prescription medication has been collected and incinerated. This collection point has kept medication from being illegally sold on the streets, prevented theft and assisted in keeping our water clean by preventing pills from being flushed. The sheriff would like to remind all citizens the drug take back collection point is in the front lobby at the sheriff’s office and is available every day.
