January 11, 2019. On November 27, 2018, Farmers Rental and Power Equipment was the victim of a break-in and then on November 28, 2018, High Country 4×4 was the victim of a break-in and thefts from numerous vehicles. As a result of investigations into both incidents three individuals were arrested on charges including felonious breaking and entering, injury to real property, injury to personal property and misdemeanor larceny. Brandon Alan Johnston, 27, of Lenoir, Jonathan Wesley Mays, 35, of Boomer and Ashley Danielle Mays, 34, of Boomer were charged following the investigation. / Read more…

January 10, 2019. Ashe County Sheriff B. Phil Howell reports the arrest of a Winston-Salem man and the recovery of five stolen vehicles after receiving a sport of a suspicious vehicle. On January 4, the Ashe County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a suspicious vehicle in Warrensville. Upon arrival, Sgt. Chris Green discovered the vehicle had been reported stolen from Winston-Salem. Sgt. Green began questioning the suspect, Junior Jack Cobbler. When questioned about the stolen vehicle, Cobbler ran from the responding deputies. After a brief foot chase, Sgt. Green, Deputies Aaron Scott and Nick Johnson apprehended Cobbler. Drug paraphernalia and additional stolen items were located inside the stolen vehicle. Cobbler, 48, of Winston-Salem was placed in the Ashe County Detention Center under a $14,000 secured bond. He was charged with felony possession of a stolen vehicle, two counts of misdemeanor possession of stolen goods, resisting a public officer and possession of drug paraphernalia.  / Read more…

The suspect is seen leaving in a dark colored pick-up truck. November 30, 2018. High Country Crime Stoppers and Boone Police seek the public’s assistance in solving the following crime: On Wednesday, November 21, a woman was filling her car tires with air at the Speedway gas station at 1256 Blowing Rock Road in Boone. While tending to her tires, an unknown man approached her from behind and touched her buttocks. When the woman confronted the suspect, a Hispanic male wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt and jeans, he left in his vehicle, a black Subaru station wagon. Images of the suspect and vehicle were captured on surveillance. November 6, 2018 High Country Crime Stoppers and Boone Police seek the public’s assistance in solving the following crime: On November 5 at approximately 6:19 PM, a black male wearing a black hoodie, dark pants, and a bandana with a white pattern over his face, accosted a female at gunpoint in the parking area of 369 Madison Avenue. The suspect demanded the victim’s vehicle keys. The suspect left in her silver 2002 Nissan Xterra with North Carolina registration plate BHX-4369. The vehicle has an App State sticker across the top of the rear windows. The rear window also has a monogram sticker, a sigma alpha omega sticker, a red adventure sticker, and a contra dance sticker. October 9, 2018. On October 7, at approximately 4:42 PM, Boone Police, Fire, and Watauga Medics responded to a report of a stabbing in the vicinity of Publix Super Market at 1620 Blowing Rock Road. The victim was identified as Harley Justin Mills, 25, of Boone. Mr. Mills was transported for medical treatment to Johnson City Medical Center. The current post-surgery status of Mr. Mills is that he is in stable condition. The suspect in this case was identified as Jeffrey Lee Warren, 41, of Sugar Grove. Mr. Warren was arrested and taken before a Watauga County Magistrate who issued a $200,000.00 secured bond for his release. Mr. Warren is currently in the custody of the Watauga County Detention Center. / Read more…

September 26, 2018. On Wednesday September 26, Watauga County 911 Emergency Communications Center received a call at 10:13 a.m. from Caldwell Community College; located at 372 Community College Drive, Boone, in reference to a person with a weapon on campus. Officers from Watauga County Sheriff’s Office and Boone Police Department responded to Caldwell Community College. The college was immediately placed on lock down for students, instructors, and staff. Officers were able to locate the suspected person on a wooded trail below Caldwell Community College. The suspect was apprehended and detained without incident. A search of the suspect revealed a fixed blade Bowie knife and an arbor saw. As a result of this apprehension, William Christopher Hardy, 21, a resident of 1999 Poplar Grove Road, Boone was charged with Carrying a Weapon on Educational Property. / Read more…

September 4, 2018 A call to the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office about a trespasser turned into an investigation about possible ginseng poaching in Todd. According a press release from the sheriff’s office, a call reported a man trespassing on private property in the Todd community on Tuesday, August 7. After calling law enforcement, the landowner confronted the trespasser who has been poaching ginseng on the owner’s property. The suspect then fled on foot prior to the officer’s arrival after throwing down the ginseng roots that he had dug out. The suspect then abandoned his vehicle nearby which was later seized by Watauga County Deputies. Following an investigation by Detective Matt Rollins of the Criminal Investigation Unit, a felony warrant for the attempted larceny of ginseng was issued for Mathew Scott Miller. August 22, 2018 On Monday night, August 20, Boone Police apprehended two suspects of a nationwide credit card fraud operation, with international implications. This investigation began after receiving information from a local bank that bank officials had observed suspicious activity at one of their ATM machines in Boone. Norris Felton McLoyd, 48, and Yeneyder Del Socorro Norris, 42, of 1927 Fuller Mill Road North, Thomasville, North Carolina, were each initially charged with three felony counts of Financial Transaction Card Forgery. They are both lodged in the Watauga County Jail under $10,000 secured bond. More charges are pending.  / Read more…

July 31, 2018. On July 29, 2018, at approximately 3:52 PM, Boone Police attempted to stop a vehicle that was driving in a reckless manner through an accident scene on NC Highway 105. The vehicle fled out the NC 105 Bypass leading officers on a chase over backroads through Valle Crucis ending on Watauga River Road where the vehicle pulled over. Norman Charles Simmons, White, Male, 55, of Laurel Fork Road, Boone, was arrested and charged with the following offenses: Felony Fleeing to Elude Arrest, Driving While Impaired, Driving with a Revoked Driver’s License, Exceeding the Posted Speed Limit, Careless and Reckless Driving, Stop Sign Violation and Operating a Motor Vehicle with an Open Container of Alcohol. / Read more…

July 16, 2018. Two more additional felony charges have been added in the case against Michael Justin Hagaman, 39, of Howards Creek Road in Boone. On Wednesday, June 6, 2018, the Boone Police Department, Watauga County Sheriff’s Office and State Bureau of Investigation conducted an investigation of a Boone man for the Possession and Distribution of Child Pornography. June 27, 2018. On June 26, Charles Wayne Bolick, 55, Brook Hollow Road, Boone, was charged with Felonious Possession of Counterfeit Currency and Felonious Attempting to Obtain Property by False Pretense. Mr. Bolick was taken before a Watauga County Magistrate where a $10,000 secured bond was set pending a July 31, 2018, appearance in Watauga District Court. These charges resulted from Mr. Bolick attempting to pass a counterfeit bill at Benchmark Provisions in downtown Boone.     This coincides with the Boone Police Department seeing a recent influx of counterfeit $100 bills. The bills that have been located have Chinese writing on front and back. They also have lines across one of the corners of the bill, both front and back. / Read more…
